Balham Bowls Club

The Carter Jonas London planning team have secured planning permission for 12 new town houses and 16 apartments in the centre of Balham for Balham Properties.

Formerly a bowls green but unused for many years, the redevelopment of the site was controversial because it was historically used for recreational purposes and is located in an open space deficiency and conservation area.

Carter Jonas began advising the owners of the site in 2015 and successfully navigated the planning system, providing sufficient evidence to the London Borough of Wandsworth that the site was surplus to local recreational requirements and therefore suitable for residential redevelopment.

Key to the scheme’s viability was the 17 car parking spaces which were secured despite its central location and PTAL rating of 6a.

Whilst the application attracted a number of objections from the local community, the London planning team were able to demonstrate the scheme’s planning merits, including 35% of the units on site to be shared ownership, finally achieving a positive resolution at planning committee and subsequent approval.
