Conservation repairs and rehabilitation on Chodds Farmhouse

Handcross

Chodds Farmhouse is part of the National Trust’s Nymans Estate and is a Grade II listed 16th and 17th C box timber frame former farmhouse with a 18th C brick façade to the front elevation.

Carter Jonas was instructed to provide feasibility advice and progress a scheme of conservation and rehabilitation works to create a holiday cottage. We were retained to design, procure and manage the works through to completion.

With much of the historic fabric surviving including much of the timber frame aligning conservation principles with building regulation compliance particular around fire precautions and means of escape was particularly challenging.

By adopting a collaborative approach with key stakeholders in the project, this was successfully achieved by embracing an alternative approach to fire precautions and means of escape with the emphasis on enhanced detection and use of traditional materials which complemented and enhanced the historic fabric of this important listed building.
