Conservation repairs and rehabilitation of Courthill Farmhouse

Slindon Estate, West Sussex

Courthill Farmhouse is a substantial 18th C Grade II listed Farmhouse with 17th C origins and a range of 19th C outbuildings. It forms part of the National Trust’s Slindon Estate and resides in the South Downs National Park.

Carter Jonas was instructed to provide feasibility advice and progress a scheme of conservation and rehabilitation works to residential let accommodation to both the Farmhouse and to repurpose the redundant curtilage listed farm buildings in ancillary residential use to complement the farmhouse and enhance the group value of the overall former farmstead. We were retained to design, procure and manage the works through to completion.

Working around the stringent planning policies of the National Park, planning consent to re-purpose the outbuildings was successfully achieved in conjunction with a carefully considered, conservation led listed building consent.

The scheme include a wood pellet boiler to meet the Trust’s key aim to decarbonised their let estate and this was carefully designed to fit within part of the outbuilding complex with minimal impact on the historic fabric.
