Defects diagnosis and conservation repairs on Bellister Castle

Haltwhistle, Northumberland

Carter Jonas were instructed by the National Trust to propose solutions to the impacts of climate change on this Grade I listed, Scheduled Monument which incorporates the 14th C ruins of a Pele Tower within a later 17th and 19th C compact tower house.

Heavy rain and driving winds were causing water ingress into the building affecting internal finishes.

Establishing the historic significance of the relevant building fabric, particularly the original early 19th C metal window frames and working with key stakeholders through carefully considered investigation work Carter Jonas were able to establish the potential causes and devise a programme of conservation led repairs works to address what is becoming an increasingly pressing issue for the nation’s heritage buildings.
