Newbury Library
Newbury, Berkshire
This 3,900 sq ft building has been designed to stringent space and cost criteria, as well as taking into account its juxtaposition to a Grade I ancient monument, the Kennet & Avon Canal, and a busy inner ring road.
Its long, low form is typical of canal-side architecture in England. The public areas are spacious, with a light-well creating visual links between the floors. The elevation that overlooks the Old Wharf and canal has full-height glazing behind a colonnade of timber yacht mast columns. The public area looks out through this colonnade.
